Harm Rabb (David Elliott)
Commander Harmon "Harm" Rabb, Jr is a brave, outstanding Navy lawyer and officer in the Navy's Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps.
A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Harm excelled as an F-14 Tomcat pilot until a crash on a carrier on a stormy night killed his Radar Intercept Officer. He was diagnosed with night blindness and removed from flight status.
Harm's father was a Naval Aviator during the Vietnam War. Harm Sr flew Iron Hand missions, to destroy SAM Missile sites in an F-4 Phantom; he was shot down in 1969. Convinced that there was foul play involved, Harm continues to be obsessed with finding out what happened to his father. During an investigation on the USS Hornet, Harm found the diary of a Vietnamese Colonel that listed names of American servicemen taken to Russia near the end of the war. Later, he received a picture of his father and several other men, obviously taken when they were Russian soldiers at a train station in Siberia. Harm later received another photo of his father with four Russians, dated 1983.
Harm's partner is Major Sarah MacKenzie, a tough and knowledgeable Marine.
Harm was briefly involved with a woman named Maria Elena Carmelita Romero Guittierrez. But he later became interested in the widow of a good friend of his, Annie Pendry. The two dated for a few months, but the relationship ended. Recently, he and Mac have become aware of their feelings for each other resulting in some tension between them.
Sarah MacKenzie (Catherine Bell)
Lt Col Sarah MacKenzie is a buttoned-down, feisty U.S. Marine Corps officer in the Judge Advocate General Corps, stationed at JAG Headquarters.
Mac, as she is known, partners Lt Commander Harmon Rabb, Jr, and she is one of the youngest women in the Corps to have attained this rank.
Tougher than most of the men who inhabit her world, Mac's unrelenting demand for respect causes her to take her job as a JAG officer very seriously; which sometimes places her in a head-to-head confrontation with Harm, telling him exactly what she thinks. Together, Harm and Mac make a formidable team, one of which the military is proud.
Mac's mother left her with her abusive father, although he never laid a hand on her. She fought an alcohol addiction in her early teens. After a high school friend died in a car accident, which she survived, Mac's uncle Matt took her to Red Rock Mesa in the desert to "dry out."
Mac was commissioned through Officers Candidate School (OCS) and served with Unit 29 in Bosnia. She also bears an uncanny, unexplained resemblance to Lieutenant Diane Shonke, a young Naval officer who was murdered.
After a period of disillusionment, she briefly left JAG for a private law firm, but soon returned. Mac was engaged to Sturgis Turner but ended up calling off the wedding.
Admiral Chegwidden (John M Jackson)
Admiral Chegwidden, or A J as he is known, is a tough-as-nails former SEAL who has achieved success in his varied military career.
In his current position, he reports directly to the Secretary of the Navy, and oversees all JAG officers who investigate and prosecute cases under military jurisdiction.
A no-nonsense official, he demands the best from his staff and is a man who enjoys action as much as the challenges of tough legal issues. Chegwidden is a highly decorated veteran of Vietnam, with aspirations to be the Chief of Naval Operations.
He began his career with the Navy as the Commanding Officer of SEAL Team 3 during the Vietnam War. Following his stint as a Special Warfare operator, he became the captain of a destroyer; which preceded his earning a law degree and joining the Judge Advocate General Corps. Before Washington, A J was the head of JAG in the Pacific.
A J's personal history is just as chequered. He was seeing a judge who was killed by an enemy. While in Italy, the Admiral married the daughter of the local mayor, but it did not last. Chegwidden has one daughter, Francesca, who lives in Naples, Italy, and is a fashion editor.
Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux)
Lt Bud Roberts is the legal assistant to Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb, Jr and Lt Col Sarah MacKenzie. Bud first met Harm and became interested in the JAG Corps as the Public Affairs Officer aboard the
USS Seahawk. Soon afterwards, he requested a transfer to JAG and was recommended to serve under Rabb by the commander's former partner, Lt Meg Austin.
He has a positive, and sometimes naÏve outlook. This characteristic, coupled with his intrepid nature and devotion to duty, makes him an integral part in this JAG team. Bud is an expert in communications and his technical wizardry and knowledge of codes and computers has helped many a JAG investigation.
Bud has also been involved with Ensign Harriet Sims since their first meeting aboard the
Seahawk, and the two are now married.
Bud's father, retired Master Chief Petty Officer "Big" Bud Roberts, USN, is an abusive man, who ill-treated both Bud and his younger brother, Mikey. Mikey is an impressionable man with a desire to be a cartoonist, and a father who wants him to "Go Navy".
