Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer)
After his second wife Lilith left him for the final time, Dr Frasier Crane left his trusty bar stool at
Cheers to start a new life in his home town of Seattle (at the age of 41). Not only did he move to a different city, he also changed jobs, from a psychiatrist to the host of a radio phone-in advice show, at Seattle's KACL 780 talk radio.
Dr Frasier Crane is an eccentric intellectual who, in starting a new life in his hometown of Seattle as a radio psychiatrist also began to reacquaint himself with his father and brother. Dr Crane also struggles with being a long-distance father to his son, Frederick. He has also developed quite a reputation in Seattle as the "host with the most." With this fame, Dr Crane has developed somewhat of an ego - an ego that the sharp-tongued Roz constantly keeps in check. Frasier is still looking for the right woman to complement his personality.
Frasier's father, Martin Crane (an ex-cop), soon moved into Frasier's apartment after his return to Seattle - a move which Frasier was not initially very happy about, not least because of the hideous vomit-green reclining chair he insisted on bringing with him. Martin also brought with him his English health care worker, Daphne, and his dog - a Jack Russell terrier called Eddie.
He can also speak fluent Spanish and can play the piano as well as the clarinet and chess.
Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce)
Pompous, fussy, a razor-sharp wit with a heart of Silly Putty, the anxiety-ridden Niles has grown in popularity until his following rivals that of his brother Frasier. Like Frasier, Niles is also a psychiatrist. Niles is jealous of Frasier's success because of his radio show, and as a result dismisses it as "pop psychology".
Niles has been in love with Daphne from the very beginning, but he never had the guts to tell her. Niles has a better relationship with his father than Frasier does, but Martin couldn't live with him after his accident because he and Maris didn't get on. In the end he went to live with Frasier.
Niles could be described as a "perfectionist" in that he seems to regard himself as perfect. Everyone else is inferior in some way. Niles likes everything to be correct - even the graffiti in the Café Nervosa toilets, which he corrected with a red pen.
Niles is no good at sports, just like his brother. Also just like Frasier, he likes going to the opera and enjoys fine wines.
Martin Crane (John Mahoney)
Martin Crane, the blue-collar father of two upper-crust psychiatrist sons, is gruff but lovable beneath a hard exterior. Injured in the line of duty and forced to retire from the police department, Martin grudgingly moved in with his son, Frasier. Martin has shown glimpses of his soft side, a side that outwardly cares for his sons, his friends and most importantly, his dog Eddie. However, Martin never loses his sarcastic edge and continues to mock the idiosyncrasies of his boys.
He is the complete opposite of his two sons, preferring a beer rather than a fine wine and a baseball game rather than an opera.
Frasier and Martin's relationship has improved a lot since they had to live together. They both want to get along with each other but often try too hard to do so.
Martin also likes Angie Dickenson movies. His favourite type of beer is Ballentine's.
Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin)
Roz Doyle is a witty, good-natured radio producer who offers a wry outlook on Frasier's callers and his life. Her refreshing, though sometimes earthy attitude, actually lends a realistic balance to Frasier's sometimes upper crust perspective. A single mom, Roz is on the lookout for the man of her dreams, but continues to come up short, filling her free time with lots of "frogs".
She has a reputation for having "a lot of experience" with men, which both Frasier and Niles like to take advantage of in their jokes. Niles often fails to recognise Roz or remember her name, though whether he does this just to wind her up is unknown.
Roz can also be quite greedy at times, such as at the SeaBee awards when she was determined to win an award, and in the way she chose Bebe as her agent after Bebe had lost her the radio host job.
Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves)
Daphne Moon is a warm-hearted, semi-psychic home-care worker, whose delightful demeanour often defuses the tension in the feuding Crane household. Originally from Manchester, where she dreamt of being a ballerina when she was younger, she moved to Seattle where she was placed with the Cranes.
Blessed with her own off-centre views on life, she remains a friendly ally for Martin, as well as a constant distraction and obsession for Niles. Since moving in to Frasier's apartment she seems to have inherited all of the household chores, much to her annoyance. She also has to make sure Martin does his exercises and often walks Eddie.
Daphne has a large and sometimes odd family back in the UK, including her eight brothers (Simon, Nigel, Reginald, Steven, Billy, Peter, David and Michael) and the infamous Grammie Moon. It was Grammie Moon who first told her she had psychic powers; apparently only the Moon women have it. She often refers to her family when she gives the Cranes some of her slightly eccentric advice.
Daphne is also good at pool and darts, though she gives the impression that she is a bit dizzy and can't understand the rules. She sometimes has a couple of pints with her friends. She also likes to watch soap operas and daytime talk shows.
