Dharma (Jenna Elfman)
Dharma 'Freedom' Finklestein-Montgomery (Jenna Elfman) a San Francisco-based Yoga instructor/ dog trainer. She is open, full of enthusiasm, and very, very uninhibited, which is why it was possible for her to fall in love with Greg Montgomery and marry him, all in episode one!
A free-spirited flower child, she approaches everything with unbridled passion, honesty and openness, but after marrying Greg she is beginning to develop a little more reserve and forethought.
Bred by Bohemian parents and free of all convention, she is slowly growing accustomed to some of the trappings of life with a U S attorney, and reluctantly participates in the country-club lifestyle of her new blueblood extended family.
Through it all, however, Dharma remains true to herself and finds the joy in each day of her life.
Greg Montgomery (Thomas Gibson)
Greg Montgomery (Thomas Gibson), or as his mother calls him, "Gregory" is conventional, well-educated, uptight, and a perfectionist. His marriage to Dharma is beginning to develop his open-minded, adventurous side.
The Harvard-educated US attorney has gone through all the trials of being wed to a rowdy hippie, including a highly public and embarrassing election campaign, but still finds Dharma's energy absolutely contagious.
By following Dharma's advice, even when it veers towards the truly whacky, he is learning to listen to his heart instead of his head, and his sense of fun and adventure is growing.
Kitty Montgomery (Susan Sullivan)
Kitty (Susan Sullivan) is Greg's extremely snotty, very uptight, socialite mother. She is distrustful of Dharma's boisterous high spirits, and is always trying to get her darling "Gregory" to do things her way.
Bossy and elitist, she spends her whole life worrying about appearances, and is terrified that people will find out she is, indeed, a gas station owner's daughter.
As she gets to know the Finklesteins better, however, a rather sporting side to Kitty develops. She is slowly beginning to accept Dharma into her family, and, very, very occasionally, deigns to do something the Finklestein way.
Larry Finklestein (Alan Rachins)
Dharma's father, Larry (Alan Rachins), is a ponytailed do-it-yourselfer. A real product of the '60s, he is absently protective of Dharma and is constantly making sure that her new family does not swallow up their beliefs of tolerance, humanity, and, basically, taking it easy.
He is a fantastic contrast to Greg's over-worked father, since Larry is perpetually following projects that no one thinks are important and which eventually die a natural death. In the course of these, he sometimes manages to recruit a very bemused Edward!
